When Alpine Dairy in Winesburg, Ohio needed to rehabilitate their aging brine tank, they turned to Advanced Rehabilitation Technology (ART) for a fast, reliable, and food-safe solution. With production downtime costing the company thousands each day, ART’s team knew there was no room for error—or delays. The result? A successful project completed in just four days using OBIC 1100, a high-performance potable water coating that not only met food safety requirements but also provided long-term protection for manufacturing facilities.
Brine tanks play a critical role in dairy production, helping to cure and store cheeses. At Alpine Dairy, the existing liner in their in-plant brine tank had served its purpose—but time had taken its toll. The liner had begun to peel, leaving sections of the tank exposed and raising concerns with health and safety inspectors.
If left unaddressed, the dairy risked fines and potential contamination issues. The team at Alpine Dairy needed a quick turnaround. “The longer they were shut down, the more money they were losing,” said Logan Clemens, project manager. “They had a very short window where we could get in, do the job, and have it ready before operations resumed.”
That’s where ART’s expertise and commitment to quality came into play. To meet the tight timeline, ART deployed two full crews working around the clock. One crew worked 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., while the other handled the night shift from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. “We started on a Sunday and finished by Thursday morning,” said Logan. “It was a nonstop effort to make sure Alpine Dairy could get back up and running as quickly as possible.”
This wasn’t just a routine rehab job. The brine tank, located inside a production facility, presented additional challenges. ART had to take extra precautions to prevent overspray, including installing plastic barriers to protect surrounding equipment and workspaces. The tank itself had an L-shaped trench design—roughly four feet wide and stretching about 250 feet in length—which required precision coating and thoughtful logistics.
Because the brine tank is in direct contact with consumable products, choosing a NSF/ANSI 61-certified product was essential. ART used OBIC 1100, a spray-applied polyurea system specifically formulated for potable water and food-safe applications. Its rapid cure time and resistance to corrosion, chemicals, and extreme conditions made it ideal for Alpine Dairy’s needs.
The dairy manufacturer made it clear they were pleased with ART’s responsiveness and speed so they could start production once again.
For ART, projects like the Alpine Dairy brine tank represent a strategic opportunity to expand into the food manufacturing and industrial sectors. While most of ART’s projects involve sanitary sewer infrastructure, their coating expertise is applicable across multiple industries—especially those with strict compliance requirements, like food and beverage.
These types of jobs demonstrate our versatility and capability in high-stakes environments, while restoring integrity and extending the service life of the structure by decades.
